Where Are You Fixing Your Eyes?
“Do you think you look forward more, down more or up more throughout your day?” This profound question came from my younger son at dinner on Monday night. Challenged by his deep thought, I started to think about where I fix my eyes throughout my day.
Am I looking up to Jesus, out to others or down focused on my own issues?
As we talked more that night, my eleven year old shared that he thinks most people look down more because of their phones. Literally as we were having this discussion, my phone was in my hand. Immediately his words challenged me and I was thankful that God can use my sweet boy to speak truth into my heart.
The more I thought about it, I realized that our “looking” problem is actually more of a “priority” problem.
What is getting most of your energy? Where are you focusing on the most? Are you looking down at your problems and to-do lists more than you are looking up to the God who gives you strength to handle all of these issues? Are you looking down at your phones more than you look forward to others in need of a word of encouragement?
Looking at our phones is not a bad thing as long as it is not our main thing, our main way to connect to others, or our first choice to solve a problem. Let’s make a priority to look up to Jesus first and then forward to others before looking down at our own problems and tasks.
Each day, God puts people in our paths to encourage, help, support and love. He desires that we begin our day looking up at Him to fill us with His strength and love so we can pour out to others. I think we can all agree that it is easy to get distracted with our own agendas that we forget to look up and out. I hope my son’s question can remind all of us to be more present and intentional about where we look and fix our eyes.
So, let me ask you the same question, “Do you think you look forward more, down more or up more throughout your day?
